Once darshan is done, most guests ask the same thing: what else should we see? Ujjain answers generously. These are the places pilgrims most often add, in roughly the order that works on foot and by auto.
Harsiddhi Temple
A Shakti Peeth close to the main temple, dedicated to Goddess Harsiddhi. Its two tall lamp pillars (deepstambh) are lit with hundreds of tiny flames on festival evenings, and the whole courtyard glows. Time your visit for dusk.
Bade Ganeshji Temple
A Ganesh temple near Mahakaleshwar known for its very large idol. It is a natural short stop before or after the main darshan.
Ram Ghat
The bathing ghat on the Shipra and the stage for the evening aarti. Arrive a little early, find a step to sit on and let the lamps float past. It is calm, free and open to everyone.
Kal Bhairav Temple
Dedicated to Kal Bhairav, the fierce guardian of the city. The tradition of offering liquor to the deity makes it one of the most talked-about temples in Ujjain. Go with curiosity rather than expectations.
Mangalnath Temple
Traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Mars, and a favourite for astrological pujas. Set near the river, it is quieter than the central temples.
How to stitch it together
- Do the close ones on foot, and hire an auto for the farther ones.
- Take the heat seriously in summer. Visit early and again after sunset.
- Check each temple's hours locally, since they can change on festival days.
