Festival weeks are when Ujjain feels most alive, and when a little preparation pays off most. This is how experienced visitors handle them.
Shravan
Usually in July and August. Devotees arrive in large numbers, especially on Mondays, and special processions pass through the city. Allow plenty of time for darshan.
Mahashivratri
A night of worship and one of the busiest days of the year. Temple hours stretch and the city fills. If you want to attend, arrange your stay several weeks ahead.
Navratri, Diwali and Kartik Purnima
Navratri is lovely at Harsiddhi, where the lamp pillars are lit. Diwali and Kartik Purnima bring families and river bathing at the Shipra. Expect good crowds on both.
Simhastha 2028
Simhastha Kumbh is held in Ujjain once every twelve years, and the next is expected in 2028. It brings very large gatherings, special arrangements and demand for rooms that begins months ahead. Follow official announcements for dates and plans.
A calm-crowd checklist
- Book accommodation first, and reconfirm a few days before you travel.
- Assume the final stretch to the temple will be on foot.
- Add buffer time for security checks and queues.
- Agree a meeting point for your group in case you are separated.
- Keep ID, a charged phone and spare copies of passes in a small pouch.
Staying close to the temple saves energy in these weeks. Message us early with your dates or group size.
