Busiest

Next Simhastha
2028

Ujjain never really has an off-season, because someone is always arriving for a festival, a vow or a family ritual. What changes is the weather and the size of the crowd. Here is how the year feels on the ground.

November to February: the sweet spot

Mornings are cool, afternoons are mild and you can walk between temples without feeling drained. Carry a light shawl for early darshan. Diwali week, Kartik Purnima and the year-end holidays are busier than ordinary weekdays.

March to June: plan around the heat

Afternoons in central India can climb past 40 °C. Go early, rest through midday, drink water often and keep your temple visits to the cooler ends of the day. Mahashivratri, which falls in February or March, is the exception: expect enormous crowds whatever the weather.

July to September: green and crowded

The rains cool the city and the surrounding fields turn green. This is also Shravan, when devotees arrive in large numbers and the Mondays are particularly full. If you want to be here then, book your room first and plan the rest afterwards.

A quick comparison

  • Want comfortable weather? November to February.
  • Want shorter queues? A weekday outside festival weeks.
  • Want the festival atmosphere? Shravan, Navratri or Mahashivratri, with advance bookings.
  • Want the biggest gathering of all? Simhastha Kumbh in 2028.
