Places to Visit in Ujjain: A Pilgrim's Guide

Ujjain is one of India's oldest living cities. Its sacred sites are spread between the busy temple core and quieter spots along the Shipra. These are the ten places pilgrims most often include, with a note on who each suits best.

Mahakaleshwar Temple and Mahakal Lok

The reason most people come. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, famed for the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti. The Mahakal Lok corridor around it, opened in 2022, adds broad walkways, sculptures and murals telling stories of Shiva.

Best for: first-time visitors and early-morning darshan.

Harsiddhi Temple

A Shakti Peeth dedicated to Goddess Harsiddhi, a short walk from Mahakaleshwar. Two tall lamp pillars light up with hundreds of flames on festival evenings.

Best for: an atmospheric visit after sunset.

Ram Ghat

The main ghat on the Shipra River. It hosts the evening aarti and is the centre of bathing during Simhastha.

Best for: dusk, quiet reflection and families.

Kal Bhairav Temple

A temple to the fierce guardian of Ujjain, known for the tradition of offering liquor to the deity.

Best for: anyone curious about the city's older Shaiva traditions.

Mangalnath Temple

Traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Mars and popular for astrological pujas, set near the river.

Best for: a calmer temple visit away from the centre.

Sandipani Ashram

The ashram of Guru Sandipani, where Krishna, Balarama and Sudama are said to have studied. Gomti Kund is nearby.

Best for: families, and anyone who loves the stories.

Bhartrihari Caves and Gadkalika

Ancient caves on the Shipra's bank linked to the poet-king Bhartrihari, who is said to have meditated here.

Best for: a quiet, reflective stop.

Vedh Shala (Jantar Mantar)

An early eighteenth-century observatory with great masonry instruments that echo Ujjain's astronomy heritage.

Best for: a change of pace, and curious kids.

Bade Ganeshji and Chintaman Ganesh

Two much-loved Ganesh temples. Bade Ganeshji, near Mahakaleshwar, is known for its very large idol; Chintaman Ganesh is among the older temples in the city.

Best for: short blessings between longer visits.

Kaliadeh Palace

A historic palace complex on an island in the Shipra, with water channels that make it pleasantly cool to wander.

Best for: history lovers and photographers.
