Two days are enough to see Ujjain's essentials without rushing. Day one stays in the central temple area. Day two ventures out. Check timings locally, as they can change.
Day 1: Around the Mahakal
Early morning
Darshan at Mahakaleshwar. If you have registered for the Bhasma Aarti, set out around 3 AM and return for a rest after sunrise. Otherwise join the regular queue.
Late morning
Wander the Mahakal Lok corridor with its sculptures and murals of Shiva stories, then stop at Bade Ganeshji nearby.
Afternoon
Back to your room for lunch and a nap. Midday is the hottest, busiest time to be outside.
Evening
Harsiddhi Temple after the lamps are lit, then Ram Ghat for the Shipra aarti.
Day 2: The wider city
Morning
Hire an auto for the day. Begin at Sandipani Ashram, where Krishna, Balarama and Sudama are said to have studied, and see Gomti Kund close by.
Late morning
Mangalnath Temple, then Kal Bhairav.
Afternoon
Vedh Shala (see Ujjain and the City of Time) and, if energy allows, Bhartrihari Caves and Gadkalika on the Shipra.
Evening
One last darshan, or a quiet hour at Ram Ghat before travelling on.
If you only have one day
Follow Day 1 and add Kal Bhairav. Agree auto fares before you start and plan extra time in festival weeks. Descriptions of each stop are in places to visit in Ujjain.
